The early days of Sachin Tendulkar

* Sachin Tendulkar was raised at Bandra East’s Sahitya Sahawas Cooperative Housing Society. Sachin has a childhood interest in cricket and tennis. In particular, he held American player John McEnroe in high regard. As a mark of his passion for the game, Tendulkar also frequently wore headbands and wristbands and carried a tennis racquet. In 1984, Tendulkar was introduced to cricket by his older brother, Ajit. At Shivaji Park in Dadar, Ajit introduced him to cricket coach Ramakant Achrekar.

* In their first encounter, Sachin Tendulkar performance was subpar. Ajit confided in Achrekar that he wasn’t playing his natural game because he felt self-conscious about the coach watching him. Ajit observed from behind a tree and asked the coach to give him another chance to play. Appearingly unnoticed, Tendulkar performed far better this time and was admitted to Achrekar’s academy.

* Achrekar was pleased by Tendulkar’s skill and suggested that he change his educational location to Sharadashram Vidyamandir School, a Dadar institution that has turned out a number of well-known cricket players.

* In late 1984, he made his cricketing debut for Sharadashram. Tendulkar had previously attended the New English School of the Indian Education Society in Bandra (East). Achrekar also provided him with morning and evening coaching at Shivaji Park.
Tendulkar played club cricket in addition to scholastic cricket. Playing for the John Bright Cricket Club, he made his Kanga Cricket League debut in 1984 at the age of 11. He was a member of the Cricket Club of India starting in 1988.

Sachin Tendulkar and Vinod Kambli

* At the age of 14, Tendulkar trained as a fast bowler at the MRF Pace Foundation in Chennai in 1987. However, his coach, Australian fast bowler Dennis Lillee, was not impressed and recommended that Tendulkar concentrate on his batting instead.

* Tendulkar and Vinod Kambli, who were both playing for Sharadashram, batted together for an uninterrupted 664 runs in a Lord Harris Shield interschool match against St. Xavier’s High School in 1988. Tendulkar finished the tournament with over 1,000 runs and 326 (not out) in that game. Up until 2006, when it was surpassed by two young cricket players in Hyderabad, India, this partnership stood as the record in all of cricket.

* Tendulkar was chosen, at the age of 14, to play for Bombay in the 1987–88 Ranji Trophy. Despite this, he was frequently deployed as a substitute fielder and did not make it into the starting eleven in any of the matches. Tendulkar became the youngest Indian to make a century on his first-class cricket debut on December 11, 1988, when he made his debut for Bombay against Gujarat at Wankhede Stadium, one year later at the age of fifteen years and thirty-two days. Tendulkar finished the match with a century not out.

* At 16 years and 205 days, Tendulkar became the youngest player to make an Indian Test debut. At 16 years and 238 days, he became the youngest player to make an Indian ODI debut. Tendulkar, just 16 years and 205 days old, played his first Test match in Karachi against Pakistan in November 1989. Prior to being bowled by Waqar Younis, who was also making his debut in that game, he scored fifteen runs. He was renowned for his ability to withstand multiple strikes to his body inflicted by the Pakistani pace attack.

* He was struck in the nose during the fourth and last Test match in Sialkot by a bouncer bowled by Younis, but he refused medical attention and carried on batting despite his nose gushing blood. Despite his small stature of 5 feet 5 inches, he had no trouble controlling the short deliveries of the quick bowlers. He made a lot of friends, and Wasim Akram is his best friend. He loved facing his fast and swing deliveries.
